Local Recycling Drive for the Environment

The C.L.O.P.E. (Collecte Locale Organisée Pour l’Environnement) project is pleased to invite you to a community walk taking place thisSunday, April 14, at 2:00 p.m., starting at the Charles de Gaulle Esplanade in Montpellier.

The goal of this walk is to collect as many cigarette butts as possible that are littering the streets of our cities and, ultimately, polluting green spaces and waterways. Once the cleanup in Montpellier’s historic center is complete, the cigarette butts will be sent to the “MéGo!” recycling plant in Brittany, with which we have a partnership.

This project was conceived by six third-year political science undergraduates. The primary goal of the project was to raise awareness among faculty and students at the Faculty of Law and Political Science in Montpellier about the issue of cigarette butt recycling.

To address the issue of cigarette butts being recycled on campus, a decision was made jointly with the administrative staff and the dean, Mr. Clamour, to install ashtrays through the same company, “MéGo!”

The core of this project is now taking things a step further.

The C.L.O.P.E. project is becoming a nonprofit organization and aims to put an end to cigarette butts being littered throughout the city of Montpellier, which inevitably end up in the sewers, waterways, and our green spaces.

This eco-citizen walk is therefore just the first step in a larger endeavor, as C.L.O.P.E. intends to continue expanding and carrying out its initiatives with the help of the many organizations and projects that are already working to promote environmental sustainability and responsibility in Montpellier.

We would be delighted to welcome you on Sunday afternoon to walk alongside you during this event, which we hope will help limit the environmental impact of such a small object that has become so common on the streets of our city.

See you on April 14 at 2:00 p.m. on the Charles de Gaulle Esplanade—bring your gloves and bags for a 1.5-hour cleanup.
