Abstract:

As environmental issues gain prominence in public discourse and climate change is set to have a lasting impact on global balances, this book examines how environmental and climate challenges are being addressed in a sector that has received little attention in the literature on the subject: the defense sector. Having recognized the disastrous long-term impact of modern wars on public health, the environment, and the climate, a number of national and international organizations now seek to adapt legal frameworks and their negotiations on defense and security to take these new environmental concerns into account. In this critical context of risk anticipation, the military plays a central role and legitimately acts as an expert. This book thus demonstrates how environmental and climate issues have been addressed within the defense sector, using the cases of France and the United States as examples.
