Thesis project

Title : Pregnancy and its risks. A sociology of the transformation of maieutic practices.

In France, throughout the 19th century, the state legislated the training of midwives, and built up this medical profession as an essential public health agent for women and newborns. At the beginning of the 21st century, the midwife's skills continue to expand, and she is now positioned as a primary care provider, in charge of the reproductive health of healthy women. Prevention remains a major part of her practice.

In a context where the emphasis is on the multiplication of risks and risk factors, whether environmental or behavioral, the aim of this research is to study the practices of midwives in terms of prevention, how these professionals apprehend risks and to what extent prejudices about the social origin of their patients or their own social background influence their practices.

Methods and means: Qualitative study (ethnographic observation and semi-structured interview with midwives from different types of practice).
