Title: Pregnancy and Its Risks: A Sociological Study of Changing Practices in Obstetrics.

In France, throughout the 19th century, the government enacted laws governing midwifery training and established the profession as an indispensable public health provider for women and newborns. The midwife of the early 21st century, whose scope of practice continues to expand, now serves as a primary care provider, managing the reproductive health of healthy women. Prevention remains a major part of her practice.

Against a backdrop of growing concern about the proliferation of risks and risk factors—whether environmental or behavioral—this study aims to examine midwives’ preventive practices, how these professionals perceive risks, and to what extent prejudices regarding their patients’ social background or their own social environment influence their practices.

Methods and approaches: Qualitative study (ethnographic observation and semi-structured interviews with midwives practicing in various settings).
