Thesis Proposal

TITLE: Smartphone Use by Independent Nurses: Toward a Shift in Nursing Practices and the Care Relationship?

There is genuine political will to adopt new technologies in healthcare. According to the “e-health” study, conducted in 2015 among the 53 European member states of the World Health Organization, it appears that 42 countries allocated public funds to e-health programs last year. The WHO strongly encourages these efforts in a recent report from March 2016 (WHO 2016). In France, policy incentives and programs are on the rise, particularly for projects aimed at providing care to patients in their homes. Connected devices, tablets, and smartphones appear to be becoming indispensable tools for patient care. I wish to study the use of smartphones by independent nurses in order to understand the implications for nursing practices and, in particular, for the nurse-patient relationship. The study will employ a qualitative methodology, consisting of interviews with nurses and ethnographic observations in patients’ homes.
