Implementation of Teledentistry in Quebec

The University of Montpellier is internationally recognized for its expertise in digital oral health, particularly through the e-DENT project—a telemedicine initiative in oral health—led by Dr. Nicolas Giraudeau, a Professor of Dentistry (MCU-PH) affiliated with CEPEL, CNRS, and UM. This project has won several awards and has been cited as a model by the French Ministry of Health as well as the World Health Organization. Dr. Giraudeau is a “key expert” for the WHO in digital oral health and a board member of numerous learned societies (EADPH, e-OralHealth Network, IADR).

The Quebec Ministry of Health and Social Services (MSSS) aims to expand tele-dental care throughout the province to improve oral health care for dependent seniors. To this end, the MSSS has enlisted the help of McGill University’s Faculty of Dentistry. Since McGill is the university with which the University of Montpellier has had a collaboration agreement on the topic of digital oral health since January 1, 2022, it is natural for the University of Montpellier to participate in this project. The University of Montpellier is expected to support the implementation of the oral telemedicine project by sharing its expertise and training professionals in the implementation of this type of project, in the organization of this distinct type of medical activity, training the healthcare professionals who will participate, training the dental surgeons who will perform the procedures, and finally, participating in the evaluation of the program.
