Screening of the documentary film *The Belly of the School*
A four-year investigation by two academics—a sociologist and an anthropologist—into French school cafeterias led to the documentary *Le ventre de l’école* and the book *Les cuisines de la nation* (DS , 1925). They demonstrate how school meal services have become industrialized, displacing home cooking—the work of women, whether cafeteria workers or homemakers—in favor of a professional, technical, elitist, and expert version of cooking, where people lose the meaning of their work. Just as the “green revolution” destroyed small-scale farming, on-site school kitchens are disappearing in favor of the industry. It is the very act of feeding and caring for others that is discredited in this shift. Is there not a need to invent new ways of connecting with the living world, of caring for both humans and non-humans?
*The Belly of the School* is a film directed by Geneviève ZOÏA, Laurent VISIER, and Giacomo MARSI. It will be released on March 4, 2025.
