A Comparative Sociohistorical Analysis of Policies on Disciplinary Institutionalization in Higher Education and Research
Abstract:
The SCPID-ESR project aims to reconstruct the origins of the disciplinary institutionalization of the social sciences from a comparative perspective by conducting groundbreaking research using previously unexamined sources. Building on previous research that has clearly identified gaps to be filled, the project aims to shed new light on the ways in which—using the French and Italian cases as examples—new bodies of knowledge emerged within the realm of academic disciplines at institutions of higher education and research. In doing so, the goal is to understand the factors that facilitate and limit the structuring of the social sciences at the European level—not by adopting the internal logic of those who champion and embody a discipline, but by focusing, from an external perspective, on institutional actors (ministries, research organizations) that decide to allocate more or less space to emerging bodies of knowledge that are subsequently consolidated.
